IRCTC’s ‘Vikalp’ Scheme Is Revolutionary

As of now, there is a mismatch between accommodation in reserved trains – While some trains are running with additional passengers, there are some trains which are running empty. And the irony is that, in most of the cases, both of these trains are running in the same direction.

To avoid such situation, Indian Railway has announced a new scheme called ‘Vikalp’ (Option), which can prove to be beneficial for all wait-listed passengers. And, at the same time, it can optimally utilise railways’ resources as well.

Here are 8 facts about Vikalp scheme which every train traveller should be aware of:

Assume you have a wait-listed ticket for a train called Lucknow Mail which goes from New Delhi to Lucknow, every day at 10 PM. The Chart has been prepared, and your ticket shows wait-listed # 32. Under Vikalp scheme, your ticket can be allocated to the next available train, which is going towards Lucknow from Delhi, and leaves after 10 PM.

Hence, without paying anything extra, your ticket can be upgraded or moved to another class under Vikalp. Assuming that you have a Sleeper class ticket for Lucknow Mail, which is wait-listed. Under Vikalp, your ticket can be upgraded to AC Superfast Express which leaves at 11.30 PM for Lucknow. You are not required to pay anything additional for the upgrade.

Hence, theoretically speaking, any ticket which is waitlisted can now be used to travel in premium trains like Shatabdi or Rajdhani, without any extra cost.

Vikalp Scheme is only for those tickets which have been booked via IRCTC website. As soon as the chart is prepared, and if your ticket is wait-listed, you will get an SMS, informing about activation of Vikalp option, and your new train, coach and berth numbers would be shared.

You have the option to either choose Vikalp option, and travel in another train, or cancel the existing ticket. In case of cancellation, the normal rules apply for wait-listed trains.

Once you opt for the Vikalp option, you can always upgrade to another higher class in the new train, by paying the difference of cost. For example, you had a AC 3 ticket, but under Vikalp, you got a sleeper class berth in a new train. Now, once you say yes to Vikalp, you can always upgrade to AC 3 in the new train by paying the difference of amount (in case berths are available). But the default allocation of ticket in a new train under Vikalp shall be free of cost, and included in the cost of the original ticket.

Now, after you say yes to Vikalp, and then you decide to cancel, then the cancellation shall be treated for a confirmed berth on the new train, not on the basis of wait-listed ticket on the old train.

Only those passengers whose tickets are wait-listed even after preparation of chart would be eligible for Vikalp option. And, once you have said yes to Vikalp, you cannot board the original train, for which your ticket was issued in waiting list.

Pan-India roll out of Vikalp shall start from April 1st. However, Indian Railways had been running the scheme on a pilot basis on few routes such as Delhi-Lucknow, Delhi-Jammu and Delhi-Mumbai, since November 1st.

Bharat Interface for Money

Here are ten things you need to know about the BHIM app:
1. What is BHIM: Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) is an initiative to enable cashless payments through your mobile phone. BHIM is interoperable with other Unified Payment Interface (UPI) applications, and bank accounts. BHIM is developed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI).
2. How it works: One has to register a bank account with BHIM, and set a UPI PIN for the bank account. Your mobile number is your payment address (PA), and you can simply start transacting. If your mobile number is already registered with UPI, you are good to go.
3. How to send or receive money: One can send money to or receive money through a mobile number or payment address. Money can also be sent to non UPI supported banks using IFSC and MMID. You can also collect money by sending a request and reverse payments if required. One can check your bank balance and transactions details on the go. You can create a custom payment address in addition to your phone number. You can scan a QR code for faster entry of payment addresses. Merchants can easily print their QR Code for display.

4. Transaction Limits: BHIM accepts a maximum of Rs 10,000 per transaction and Rs 20,000 limit within 24 hours. It supports Hindi and English currently.
5. Compatible OS: Bharat Interface for Money app is currently available on Android (Version 8 and above) and iOS mobiles (Version 5 and above).
6. Essentials for BHIM: To start using Bharat Interface for Money one needs to have a Smartphone, Internet access, an Indian bank account that supports UPI payments and a mobile number linked to the bank account.
7. How to setup a BHIM PIN: One can set your UPI PIN by going to Main Menu -Bank Set UPI-PIN for the selected account.
8. Bank support: Currently, Bharat Interface for Money supports linking of one bank only. At the time of account set-up, one can link a preferred bank account as the default account. In case you want to link another bank account, you can go to Main menu, choose Bank Accounts and select your default account. Any money that is transferred to you using your mobile number or payment address will be credited into your default account.

10. Charges for BHIM: There are no charges for making transaction through Bharat Interface for Money. However banks might levy a nominal charge as UPI or IMPS transfer fee.

IRCTC Makes Aadhaar Card Compulsory For Booking Train Tickets

Linking of Aadhaar cards with train tickets would be mandatory effective December, 2016, which means that passengers who don’t have Aadhaar Card, won’t be able to issue train tickets. This major collaboration between Aadhaar and train tickets would be made compulsory for both reserved and unreserved categories; besides holding true for online as well as counter tickets.

Already more than 96% of Indians have an Aadhaar Card; and the remaining few would be now forced to apply for one. The linking of Aadhaar database with IRCTC’s ticketing system is already on, and the process is expected to be over by December.

There are innumerable advantages of linking Aadhaar with train bookings, as there would be a centralized, well documented and live database of passengers which can be immensely useful for various purposes. However, the intention of Indian Railways to link Aadhaar immediately has been mainly inspired from three factors:

a) Giving out concessions would be easier and fair now. As Aadhaar card would be directly linked with the ticket, the railway authorities would be able to easily check whether the concession is eligible or not. Ticket collectors would be carrying mobile handheld device, which will instantly verify the claims of the passenger. As shared earlier, Railways provide concessions across more than 50 categories, and a substantial portion of them is misused.

b) The use Aadhaar card would stop unauthorized agents and touts from booking tickets in fake names, and then selling them at higher prices. IRCTC CMD A K Manocha said, “We have started the process to issue Aadhar based ticketing and likely to be rolled out by December this year . People will now have to provide Aadhaar number for registering with IRCTC. This will check fraudulent booking by touts and being transparency in the ticketing,”

c) Every train passenger would be able to get insurance now. As of now, only online booking of train tickets allow passengers to opt for travel insurance, which would be now offered to counter ticket holders as well; and most importantly, unreserved passengers as well.

Since Indian Railways introduced travel insurance, around 27 lakh passengers have availed insurance, costing around 10 paisa to 90 paisa per trip. With Aadhaar, all passengers would be able to use this privilege.

Manocha further said, “About 27 lakh passengers have availed the travel insurance since the launch of insurance on September 1. The reason we have not covered unreserved category yet is that we don’t have any database of people travelling in unreserved coaches but with Aadhar that is possible. It will also bring the insurance premium from 92 paise now to somewhere around 10-50p per travel,”
